Mateel by Veronica Fern-McElarney
Strange the way I’m backwards from the rest;
Basking in a fog-drenched wood; radiant in its melancholy.
Like a rare vintage, cooled by design, the forest reveals its ancient secrets.
Sempervirens is the lofty name for this medieval cathedral;
A chilly creek its baptismal font.
As masses of curling green fronds kneel before her, murmuring vespers,
I receive the sacred gifts, and I am still.
